TO SCRAPE OR NOT TO SCRAPE WHEN COOLING HOT HORSES
Dr David Marlin
How do we explain the idea that scraping is a waste of time and if you have a SEVERELY HYPERTHERMIC HORSE (very hot to touch, blowing hard and unsteady on its feet) you will cool it more effectively if you continue to apply cold water as opposed to stopping and scraping?
The systems we developed for Beijing 2008 consist of ice water reservoirs and pumps which go to hand held spray heads. NO SCRAPING!!!! Spray Spray Spray and when horse is cooling down, a short walk.
The professional endurance riders in the Gulf NEVER scrape.
Data shows that if you don’t scrape the skin DOES NOT warm-up – it continues to cool!
